Trajectories of the School's students prove that education is truly transformative
On August 11, Student Day, FGV EMAp proudly celebrates the trajectory of its students, who are the essence of the institution. This is a day to recognize the effort, dedication, and talent that each student brings to our academic community. They are the protagonists of inspiring stories that reflect not only academic excellence, but also the ability to overcome challenges and transform lives through education.
Among the many students who stand out at FGV EMAp, we will tell the trajectories of four of them, which are marked by remarkable achievements and inspiring trajectories. Lucas Resck, Tiago da Silva Henrique, Vitoria Guardieiro and Wellington Silva arrived at EMAp through FGV's Center for the Development of Mathematics and Science (CDMC), which since 2017 has identified and supported young talents who stand out in the Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympiad (OBMEP).
Lucas Resck has his passport stamped not only for Germany - like Duim, he was selected for the Heidelberg Laureate Forum - but also for the United Kingdom, where he will then embark to study for his doctorate at the University of Cambridge. Graduated and master's from FGV EMAp, Lucas has published three articles in prestigious scientific journals and conferences. One of these even resulted in the exchange opportunity in 2022 at Rice University, in Houston (USA). Resck, who was also approved in the doctoral selection process at four other foreign universities, attributes his success to FGV EMAp's exceptional opportunities and prestige on the global stage. "With renowned professors who seek to publish in prestigious journals, I had access to a level of preparation that definitely opened doors for me," he explains.

Born in Florianópolis, Tiago da Silva Henrique carries with him a contagious determination and a desire for achievement. After graduating with honors in the courses of Applied Mathematics and Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Tiago is now dedicated to his master's degree, while also taking doctoral courses. This constant effort has resulted in works of great impact, such as the one he presented at the 41st edition of the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML), held in July in Austria. The student presented the article "Embarrassingly Parallel GFlowNets", developed in collaboration with Luiz Max Carvalho and Diego Mesquita, researchers at FGV EMAp, as well as Amauri Souza and Samuel Kaski, from Aalto University, Finland. The paper describes a new algorithm for performing parallel Bayesian inference on distributions over a finite number of variables.

Vitoria Guardieiro brightens up this team, challenging the stereotypes that keep women away from the exact sciences. Since graduation, she has been dedicated to the ethics of machine learning and understanding the data that drives these technologies, highlighting her determination to confront and transform the way science is perceived and applied. In the undergraduate and master's degrees, which were taken at the School, she was able to develop relevant research, such as the one she published in the prestigious Springer magazine. In the coming days, she will begin a new challenge, her doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania, in the United States, where she will certainly continue to achieve great things. And it doesn't stop there! In the coming days, we will bring you all the details of this impressive trajectory, which serves as an inspiration for all of us.

Another brilliant EMAp student, Wellington José Leite da Silva, is from Maceió (AL) and faced many challenges to access education and is a symbol of resilience. Studying with the help of a street light pole to prepare for OBMEP, since for eight months there was no power in his house, he did not allow his family's financial difficulties to stop him from pursuing his dreams.
"My mother has no formal education, but she always encouraged me because she believed that education could transform our reality". Wellington's determination was fundamental for him to win the silver medal in the 2018 event, a feat that opened the doors for him to FGV EMAp. At the School, he graduated in Applied Mathematics and is currently pursuing a master's degree, showing a remarkable capacity for learning and overcoming.
"Where I come from, the prospects were limited, but thanks to the School and the CDMC, today I see a promising future. I want to continue researching and developing myself, I'm living what I've always dreamed of".

These stories are a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of education on people's lives and society. On Student's Day, FGV EMAp congratulates all its students for their daily effort, and reaffirms its commitment to supporting and celebrating their achievements, today and always.
