In total, 38 students from the Applied Mathematics and Data Science and Artificial Intelligence courses were honored in a ceremony that took place at the Cultural Center last friday
Last Friday (1), the Fundação Getulio Vargas School of Applied Mathematics (FGV EMAp) held the graduation ceremony for the Applied Mathematics and Data Science and Artificial Intelligence courses. In total, 38 students from the classes of 2023 were honored in a ceremony that took place at the FGV Cultural Center.

Of the 38 students who completed their degree last year, 21 studied Applied Mathematics, one of the most highly regarded courses in the country and with a maximum grade (5) from the Ministry of Education (MEC). FGV EMAp was a pioneering institution in Brazil to offer a degree program in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and has now graduated its 1st class with 13 students.
Among the group, there were also four students who obtained a double degree at FGV. They are professionals trained in both courses simultaneously and who also received their diplomas.
FGV in first place
FGV is a pioneer in the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence course and graduates are aware that they are favorites to fill several gaps in the job market. Luis Fernando Souza Luz understands that there are many vacancies for data scientists, but most professionals do not have the necessary background to fulfill their mission.
For him, the four years at FGV EMAp make course graduates stand out in the market. “Our coordinator tells us that there is a big search for us from companies. The market is booming looking for Data Science professionals to work. We see that it is an area with high demand, but with a lack of trained professionals. We now have the opportunity to make a difference and vacancies keep coming up”, points out Luz.
Victor de Almeida Bombarda was one of 13 graduates of FGV's 1st CdDIA class
His classmate, Victor de Almeida Bombarda, follows the same line and believes that FGV offers the necessary technological tools for students to enter the market as better options for companies in the sector.
“It is a course that covers Mathematics, Statistics and Computing and allows the person to relate these areas of Science to various forms of application. At EMAp, we are pleased to host several workshops from companies in the sector, we participate in countless projects as if we were already employed in a company. It is a very complete course that trains us to work in Data Science”, he says.
Reference to other institutions
César Camacho, Director of FGV EMAp, approves the School's initiative to be a reference for several other educational institutions that want to invest in innovative courses.
César Camacho speaks at the graduation ceremony at FGV EMAp
“CdDIA was a bet by FGV aimed at developing this type of discipline in Brazil. And it comes with a certain delay, as, in the USA, this undergraduate course was created in 2010. However, EMAp was a pioneer in this initiative. As we see the formation of the 1st class here, we are also realizing that other colleges are proceeding to offer this course”, observes Camacho.
“It is a very difficult course to implement, because it consists of several components, Mathematics, Statistics, Probability and Optimization. On the other hand, it adds Computing subjects, some of which are more in-depth and taught in the Computing Department. So, bringing these aspects of Science together is an innovative task and requires a special initiative, as it means creating a mixture that has never been done before. So, we have been very successful in these four years, we are seeing that the number of students is growing, we have hired several top researchers and professors from all over the world and the graduated students are showing their high capacity”, adds the Director.
The Applied Mathematics course combines traditional Mathematics with Statistics and Computing techniques, encouraging the development of solutions to problems that are fully applicable in everyday life. Of the 21 students who earned their diplomas at FGV, Emanuel Bissiatti de Almeida is proud to have overcome all obstacles in his four years.

“The beginning was very complicated. I didn't have much of a study pace, much of an idea of what college was like, but little by little, with the support of teachers, my family and colleagues, I managed to keep up with the ideal pace. I'm very happy to have graduated from the Applied Mathematics course, I've always really liked Mathematics. This course is growing a lot for study research, which is very interesting, as it opens up the chance to join leading companies in the segment. So, now is the time to really celebrate this achievement”, he celebrates.
Breaking borders in Brazil
From the class formed in 2023, Patrick and Sávio Amaral from Piauí certainly make the little more than 6 thousand inhabitants of the small Cocal dos Alves, a city 280 kilometers from the capital Teresina, very proud. Father Antônio Cardoso do Amaral emphasized the size of the twins' achievement, now graduated from MAp and ready to supply the market.
“It is a great emotion to follow the formation of two boys who represent such a small city, which is Cocal dos Alves (PI). They are the first ones, who left there and finished the course. We view this achievement with great enthusiasm, because we want them to be examples for those who will come. For us, the fact that the first ones are our children makes us doubly happy and we are here with great joy to see this ceremony that is so important to their lives up close”, reinforces Amaral.
Graduation ceremony was attended by parents and family members of the 2023 MAp and CdDIA graduating class at FGV
The MAp course offered by FGV creates opportunities for the development of new technologies and solutions to real problems. There are more than 30 excellent qualified teachers with differentiated training to expand knowledge of one of the fastest growing areas in Brazil.
MAp students are encouraged to participate in introductory research projects under the supervision of our professors, or to advance into more specialized branches of Mathematics and Computing. Professionals trained by FGV EMAp are able to work in strategic sectors of public or private companies, such as banks and consultancies, with a very high percentage of employability.

Data Science and Artificial Intelligence
FGV EMAp was a pioneering institution in Brazil to offer a degree program in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. The data scientist is the professional responsible for highlighting the knowledge hidden in large volumes of data.
In the midst of this process comes Artificial Intelligence, which is the set of computational, mathematical and engineering techniques that aim to train computers in order to simulate human activities.
FGV EMAp offers techniques that enable computers to improve their algorithms, first testing them with established data, and with each iteration produced, getting closer to a solution to the proposed problem.
This is an extremely new area full of challenges that is not yet offered as widely in Brazil. And FGV is still one of the few institutions that offers the opportunity to acquire professional training of international quality in this sector.
