This Wednesday, January 15, 2025, the School of Applied Mathematics at Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV EMAp) welcomed the visit of the Municipal Secretary of Education of Rio de Janeiro, Renan Ferreirinha. The meeting took place during the third edition of the Summer Talent Selection Course, organized by the Center for the Development of Mathematics and Sciences (FGV CDMC) in collaboration with FGV EMAp.

Accompanying the secretary were Professor Carla Celestino, Coordinator of Elementary Education, and her advisor, Thamara Monteiro. Representing FGV were Henrique Paim, Romeu Caputo, and Emílio Munaro from the Directorate of Public Policies and Educational Management (FGV DPGE), as well as César Camacho, Director of FGV EMAp.

During the event, Renan Ferreirinha highlighted the importance of mathematics in his personal and academic journey: “I am a product of the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools. I imagine many of you are as well. I was a medalist six times in a row at OBMEP, and mathematics was truly a game-changer for me. FGV EMAp is an internationally renowned institution, positioned at the forefront of global knowledge in the areas you are venturing into.”

The secretary also emphasized the role of diversity and the potential of Rio de Janeiro as a reference center in the field: “I believe another strong feature of FGV EMAp is this territorial and socioeconomic diversity, but above all, the presence of so much talent here. Mayor Eduardo Paes has made it very clear that he wants to make Rio the mathematics capital. And for that, we have institutions like FGV EMAp,” he stated.

He concluded with an invitation to young people across Brazil: “Rio has this potential. So, if you're from the North, Northeast, South, Midwest, or any other state in the Southeast, you too can become a little ‘carioca.’ Come here, we want to create the conditions for that, and FGV EMAp certainly plays a central role.”

The Summer Talent Selection Course, held from January 13 to 17, 2025, brings together 51 students from eight Brazilian states for an in-person experience. It offers a hybrid academic program with intensive classes in Mathematics, Computing, Data Science, Law, Economics, Portuguese, and Writing. The teaching staff comprises professors from FGV and other renowned institutions such as UFOP, CEFET-MG, UNISINOS, UEPG, IFSC, and COLUNI, as well as the Espírito Santo State Department of Education (SEDU).

The visit by the secretary and other leaders reinforces FGV EMAp’s commitment to promoting academic excellence, encouraging young talent, and collaborating with the public sector to build a more inclusive and transformative education system.
