The School of Applied Mathematics at Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV EMAp) deeply regrets the passing of Professor Jacob Palis Jr., which occurred on Wednesday, May 7, at the age of eighty-five, in Rio de Janeiro.
A brilliant mathematician, he made fundamental contributions to the theory of Dynamical Systems, becoming one of its leading figures internationally. He methodically built a scientific career that reflected his passion for the promotion of science and for science policy.
He served as President of the Brazilian Mathematical Society, Director of IMPA, Secretary-General and President of the International Mathematical Union, and President of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. He strengthened the ties between IMPA and FGV and was, until his passing, a member of FGV’s Board of Directors.
