The School of Applied Mathematics at Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV EMAp) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, invites applications for one open-rank faculty position in Statistics beginning in February 2020. We are looking for established academics (associate/full professor) or outstanding young academics (assistant professor) in Statistics and Data Science. The successful candidate is expected to teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels, publish in high impact journals, supervise research (postgraduate) students, and be committed to providing service to the department and Institution. The post holder is also expected to develop a vibrant externally funded research program which complements the current research activities in statistics and data science. Collaborative research, both within the Institution and externally, is desired. Individuals with interests in computational statistics, statistical learning, high dimensional statistics and statistical methods to handle large/massive/complex data are particularly invited to apply.
The successful candidate is expected to hold a Ph.D. in statistics, or a related discipline, by the time of the appointment. At the assistant professor level, we expect the applicant to have a compatible track of publications and a strong potential of publishing in top ranked journals. At higher levels (associate or full) it is expected the applicant to have an established line of research with a strong publication record, proven ability to attract external funding, and an established research network.
The successful candidate will also possess excellent communication and presentation skills, being capable of teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students across our portfolio of Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science courses. Fluence in Portuguese is desired but not required. However, by the end of the second year the applicant may be required to teach in portuguese.
Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV) is a distinguished and internationally renowned Brazilian higher-learning institution dedicated to the intellectual development of the nation. The School of Applied Mathematics (EMAp) located in Rio de Janeiro, has as its main goals to contribute with the effort of FGV towards innovation through the use of Mathematics in its numerous areas of application, especially the Applied Social Sciences.

The School of Applied Mathematics currently offers Ph.D., M.Sc., and undergraduate degrees in applied mathematics and, starting next year, Data Science. We also have an ongoing Postdoctoral Fellowship program. In 2020 a research center for Data Science will be created boosting investigation in the area.
