On September 5th and 6th, the Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) in Rio de Janeiro hosted the 2nd edition of the "Teacher Enhancement" event in Espírito Santo. This initiative, the result of a partnership between the Center for the Development of Mathematics and Sciences (FGV CDMC), the School of Applied Mathematics of Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV EMAp), and the Espírito Santo State Department of Education (Sedu) through the Mathematics in the Network Program, brought together 48 elementary and high school teachers from various regions of the state, all active in the Mathematics Scientific Initiation Poles (PicMat), as well as six FGV EMAp professors.
The main goal of the event was to provide ongoing training for these educators, seeking to enhance their pedagogical practices and improve the quality of Mathematics teaching in public schools. The classes, conducted by FGV EMAp professors, covered topics such as probability, game theory, and the history of mathematics, offering an immersive experience in new content and teaching approaches.
Program
The first day of the event, September 5th, began with speeches by César Camacho, director of FGV EMAp, and Maria Izabel Camacho, director of FGV CDMC. Throughout the morning and afternoon, two lectures were held: "Topics from the Ancient History of Mathematics," by Professor Eduardo Wagner, and "The Beginnings of Mathematical Research in Brazil," by César Camacho.
On Friday, the second and final day of the Teacher Enhancement program, four lectures were delivered. In the morning, Professor Paulo Cezar Carvalho spoke about Probability, and Walter Sande gave a brief introduction to Game Theory. After lunch, Professor Dário Oliveira gave a talk on Geospatial AI, followed by Antônio Carlos Branco, who addressed the topic "Gerschgorin Discs: Where are the Eigenvalues of a Matrix?".
All lectures were presented by FGV EMAp professors.
Experiences
Lenise Julia Fassini, a teacher at EEEEFM Maria Zoauin de Miranda, highlighted the importance of the event for her professional journey: “Sitting in the student’s seat gave me a different perspective in several aspects. The brilliance of the FGV teaching team inspires me to be a better teacher, and I leave here with new knowledge and a lot of energy to apply in the classroom.” She also commented on how the topics covered, especially Probability and the History of Mathematics, sparked new ways to engage students’ curiosity.

Gilberto Paiva, a teacher at EEEFM Teófilo Paulino, located in the city of Domingos Martins, emphasized the direct impact of the event on his classes. “Revisiting certain content and showing our students that there is much more beyond the textbook are essential tools for making our lessons more dynamic,” he said. For him, the partnership between FGV and Sedu is an excellent training opportunity, allowing closer contact with renowned professors and updated content.

Walter Sande, a professor at FGV EMAp and speaker at the event, emphasized the importance of ongoing training for basic education teachers: “It is part of EMAp's mission to promote the dissemination of Applied Mathematics and Data Science. Teacher training is essential for our young people to see these fields as career opportunities.”
